Visit to Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI)

Members and friends of the Laois Association enjoyed an uplifting and informative visit to the Museum of Literature of Ireland on Thursday 17 October 2024. The Museum of Literature is situated in the UCD Naughton Joyce Centre, 86, St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2.

The enthusiastic group assembled at the Museum at 10:00 am and we were directed to the Commons Café downstairs where we enjoyed fresh scones with tea / coffee before we returned to the main entrance hall to commence our guided tour at 11:00 am.

UCD Newman House comprises of two superb Georgian townhouses, which are particularly notable for their elegant interiors and splendid plasterwork. No.85 St Stephen’s Green was built in 1738 and has fine stuccowork by the Lafranchini brothers. No.86, built in 1765, contains stuccowork by Robert West, the most distinctive of the Dublin School of Plaster Workers.

Our excellent tour guide began by describing how the Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI) was established. It was opened in September 2019, as a result of initial conversations that began in 2010 between the National Library of Ireland and UCD around a creative alliance between two unique assets – the NLI’s Joyce collections and UCD’s most significant historic property, namely Newman House. A working group was established in 2012, and an exceptionally generous donation from Martin and Carmel Naughton propelled the idea into reality.

The following photographs were taken during our guided tour of the Museum of Literature Ireland (MoLI) on 17 October 2024.

This is ‘Copy No. 1’ of the first edition of Joyce’s Ulysses. It contains an inscription from Joyce to his patron Harriet Shaw Weaver, dated 2 February 1922, the day of publication. Weaver donated it to the National Library of Ireland 30 years later.
