Participants were encouraged by the organisers to reserve seats in Coach E (on both journeys) so – as much as is possible – our group could travel together in the same train carriage.

Thanks to our Rathdowney-based entertainer, Michael Creagh, a song that has become a favourite anthem of Association members is ‘Let Me off in Ballybrophy’. Michael led a rendition to welcome members as they alighted from the train at Ballybrophy on their way to visit Donaghmore.

Donaghmore Famine Workhouse Museum

Donaghmore Famine Workhouse Museum is a unique attraction in Co. Laois, and aims to tell the story of the families who lived and died within the Famine Workhouse walls before, during and after the Great Famine. The Museum uses guided and self-guided tours combined with various exhibits to explain the socio-economic conditions which led to the establishment of this and other Workhouses.

We had an enlightening guided tour of the Donaghmore Famine Workhouse Museum by one of their most experienced guides, our very own, Michael Creagh.
